Pepperl+Fuchs R200 sensor reaches 150 m with a reflector at 3 mm repeat accuracy

Pepperl+Fuchs has released the second generation of its R200 series distance sensors, pairing its Pulse Ranging Technology (PRT) with multi-target evaluation. The sensor measures up to 20 m on natural objects and up to 150 m with a reflector, with a repeat accuracy of up to 3 mm.

PRT is a time-of-flight method developed by Pepperl+Fuchs. The sensor emits short, high-energy laser pulses, picks up their reflections with a light-sensitive receiver, and calculates distance directly from the measured flight time. The company says the high energy density of those pulses makes the sensor resistant to interference, so results stay accurate under ambient light and as object properties change.

The multi-target function is the second-generation addition. Pepperl+Fuchs says it improves process reliability in rain, snow, fog and dust, as well as around interfering reflections.

For automation engineers, the more practical change may be the interface. The R200 uses IO-Link with Smart Sensor Profile, a standard that gives sensors from different manufacturers the same access to settings, parameters, process data and diagnostics. Pepperl+Fuchs says that lets engineers use function blocks for control integration and reuse existing user programs. The company says it is among the first manufacturers to implement version 1.1.3 of the profile, the latest published by the IO-Link consortium.

Pepperl+Fuchs lists occupancy detection, container positioning, lift height measurement and vehicle detection as target tasks in logistics, material flow and access control. It describes the housing as compact, aimed at installations where space is limited.

The R200 and R201 are the longer-range members of the company's R10x and R20x photoelectric sensor family, which share an industry-standard housing with several mounting patterns. The R20x sensors add rotatable connectors. Commissioning uses a button, a potentiometer and LEDs, and IO-Link can also handle configuration. Pepperl+Fuchs says it will implement the Smart Sensor Profile standard in future products as well.
