Freemelt has received an order from Fusion for Energy (F4E), the European Union body that manages Europe's contribution to ITER and fusion energy development, to manufacture and deliver 33,000 tungsten-based components. The parts are destined for JT-60SA, a European-Japanese fusion program that operates the world's largest superconducting tokamak, located in Naka, Japan. The order carries a base value of SEK 55 million ($5.7 million), with additional options that could raise the total contract value to SEK 84 million ($8.7 million).

Deliveries run over a two-year period through 2028, with most of the 33,000 components shipping in 2027. Freemelt delivers the parts through its Manufacturing business area, working with established partners across the value chain, from raw material sourcing to finished, qualified components. That qualification step matters as much as the melt itself: tokamak builders need documented proof that tens of thousands of plasma-facing parts meet dimensional and material tolerances before they go anywhere near a vacuum vessel.

Tungsten ends up as the plasma-facing material of choice inside a tokamak because of its high melting point, low sputtering rate and high thermal conductivity. Those properties let it withstand the heat and particle bombardment generated where the plasma meets the reactor wall. JT-60SA, developed jointly by Europe and Japan, ranks as the largest superconducting tokamak built to date.

"The order from F4E demonstrates how Freemelt's expertise in tungsten and materials can create value in strategically important growth markets," said Daniel Gidlund, Chief Executive Officer of Freemelt.

The order lands on the heels of a strong year for the company. Freemelt tripled net sales in 2025, a period that included another F4E contract, 40 percent growth in its installed machine base, and its first deliveries into Asia. It has also picked up fusion-sector business elsewhere in 2026, including orders from TAE Technologies and an MoU with Proxima Fusion that brought Freemelt into the Alpha Alliance, signaling that the F4E deal fits a wider push into fusion supply chains rather than a one-off contract.
