Uviquity has unveiled its first product, a chip-scale laser that produces deep-UV light at 229 nm from a single semiconductor chip. The company says the device is the first at this wavelength built on a single semiconductor chip, delivering collimated, narrow-linewidth, spectrally pure output suited to analytical and inspection instruments across semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, petrochemical processing, environmental monitoring, and defense applications.

The device is built on Uviquity's aluminum nitride photonic integrated circuit platform, which uses second harmonic generation in proprietary AlN waveguides to convert a 445 nm blue semiconductor laser to 229 nm deep-UV output. The company says it holds the shortest-wavelength SHG record demonstrated to date in AlN, with the platform covered by more than 20 pending patents. The underlying technology was first published at SPIE Photonics West in January 2026.

The interesting part for instrument developers is what this replaces. Engineers who need deep-UV light at analytical performance levels currently have few options outside large, expensive benchtop systems that blend laser, lamp, and LED components, each carrying trade-offs in spectral purity, brightness, lifetime, form factor, and cost. Uviquity's package runs on low-voltage electrical input and is sized for handheld, in-line, and embedded instrument designs.

At 229 nm, deep-UV light enables resonance-enhanced detection of biological and chemical signatures and provides a measurement window largely free of background fluorescence in most organic samples. The laser supports Raman, fluorescence, photoluminescence, and absorption spectroscopy. Scott Burroughs, CEO and co-founder of Uviquity, said instrument developers "know what deep-UV at these wavelengths can do" but have lacked "a compact, reliable source they could build a product around." Sampling allocations for the fourth quarter of 2026 are now open to OEM partners.

The same AlN platform supports a separate far-UVC disinfection product line at 222 nm, under development for air, food, water, and medical applications. Uviquity is backed by Emerald Development Managers, AgFunder, and MANN+HUMMEL.
