TESCO Metering has launched the Model 6440 Three-Phase Voltage Synthesizer, the newest addition to its TESCO Portable Meter Testing Platform. The Bristol, Pennsylvania company unveiled the unit July 9, positioning it as a companion to the existing TESCO 6330 Meter Site Analyzer for utility field crews handling revenue meter commissioning and diagnostics.
The 6440 generates a programmable, isolated three-phase voltage source from 69 to 480 VAC, works on both 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems, and outputs 100 VA per phase with voltage setting accuracy of ±0.5 percent and total harmonic distortion under 3 percent. It covers five service configurations common in the field: 69/120V WYE, 120/208V WYE, 120/240V DELTA, 277/480V WYE, and 240/480V DELTA. The instrument runs on FPGA-controlled circuitry with an isolated Class-D amplifier, built-in surge protection, and draws power from a standard 120 VAC outlet.
What's new here is the split architecture. Rather than bundling a voltage source and a measurement unit into one heavy case, TESCO separates the two: the 6440 handles voltage generation while the 6330 performs the measurement and analysis, covering voltage, current, phase angle, burden, harmonics, and overall meter accuracy. Technicians who only need a voltage source for a quick verification can leave the analyzer behind, and vice versa. Engineers running frequent site visits will care about the weight and setup time that approach saves compared with hauling a single integrated tester built for every scenario.
TESCO says the pairing covers a wide range of field tasks, including AMI validation, distributed energy resource interconnection testing, intertie meter testing, power quality investigations, site acceptance testing, and troubleshooting on both electromechanical and solid-state meters. That range lets utilities standardize field procedures across legacy meter fleets and newer smart-metering rollouts with the same test kit. "The expansion of the TESCO Portable Meter Testing Platform with the Model 6440 gives technicians a highly accurate, portable three-phase voltage source that integrates seamlessly with the 6330 Meter Site Analyzer," said Tom Lawton, president and CEO of TESCO Metering.
The launch lands as utilities expand AMI, distributed energy resource, and EV charging deployments, all of which require more frequent field verification of revenue meters. TESCO, which has manufactured metering equipment in the U.S. since 1904, says the modular approach lets customers add instruments to the platform as testing needs grow rather than replacing an entire integrated system. The company has not disclosed pricing or availability dates for the Model 6440.
