Teledyne e2v introduced Nexora, a new family of backside-illuminated (BSI) global shutter CMOS image sensors for high-speed machine vision, including applications like intelligent traffic systems and outdoor surveillance. The sensors ship in 12 MP (4,096 by 3,072) and 16 MP (4,096 by 4,096) resolutions, each available in monochrome and color versions.
The BSI pixel design places the photodiode closer to incoming light than a conventional front-side illuminated sensor, expanding the light-sensitive area of each pixel. Teledyne e2v says the approach delivers quantum efficiency of up to 73 percent at 550 nanometers and 15 percent at 940 nanometers, extending sensitivity into near-infrared wavelengths. For engineers building outdoor or low-light inspection systems, that near-infrared number is worth checking against existing global shutter sensors on the market. Nexora also uses a 3D-stacked architecture, integrating multiple functional layers within the sensor package, which Teledyne e2v says gives camera manufacturers more room to shrink imaging systems without cutting performance.
The sensor uses an LVDS interface compatible with a range of FPGAs and image signal processors. Nexora ships in a 23 by 21.5 millimeter package sized to fit 29 by 29 millimeter camera housings and standard C-mount optics, letting camera manufacturers drop the new sensor into existing designs.
Rafael Romay, president of Teledyne Vision Solutions, said the company "focused on giving camera manufacturers a new platform that balances image quality, speed and integration simplicity." Documentation and samples are available now upon request. Teledyne e2v will show Nexora at the VISION trade show in Stuttgart, Germany, Oct. 6–8, in Hall 8, Booth 8B10.
