SPECTRO Analytical Instruments has introduced a new, improved version of its SPECTROSCOUT kt portable ED-XRF analyzer, built for hallmarking centers, assay offices, jewelers, pawn shops, and refiners that need to verify precious-metal purity on the spot. SPECTRO says the handheld unit analyzes "up to 25 elements in precious metal alloys" with measurement times of 30 to 90 seconds, positioning it as a faster alternative to benchtop XRF systems for point-of-sale checks and incoming inspection.

The analyzer builds on sensor technology from SPECTRO's xSORT handheld unit but swaps in a silicon drift detector (SDD) in place of the Si-PIN detectors SPECTRO says are common in competing instruments. SDD sensors process X-ray counts with better energy resolution, which SPECTRO credits for letting SPECTROSCOUT kt report full alloy composition instead of just the dominant metal. The unit runs a fundamental-parameters screening method, the same approach used in SPECTRO's MIDEX and SPECTROCUBE D benchtop analyzers, with optional customer-specific calibrations available for tighter accuracy on house alloys. Standardization requires one reference sample and roughly five minutes.

What's new here is the emphasis on quantifying minor elements rather than just naming an alloy grade, a distinction SPECTRO says other instruments sacrifice for speed. An integrated video system narrows the analysis spot to 1 mm for small or mixed-alloy pieces, with on-screen sample positioning and image storage tied to each reading. That makes the analyzer useful in showrooms checking whether a piece's measured purity matches its stamped hallmark, a task assayers currently split between visual inspection and slower benchtop runs.

SPECTROSCOUT kt connects by USB to a Windows tablet, laptop, or PC running SPECTRO's XRF Analyzer Pro software, which loads predefined application packages onto a single screen alongside a configurable grade library and full access to past and current spectra. SPECTRO kept the unit's footprint small enough for crowded counters and benchtops despite a sample compartment sized for larger pieces.

SPECTRO backs the analyzer with AMECARE Performance Services, citing hundreds of support engineers across more than 50 countries for on-site service. That network matters for shops running SPECTROSCOUT kt as their only analyzer rather than as a backup to a benchtop system, since any downtime on the counter stalls every purity check behind it.
