SHINING 3D has launched the OptimScan Q12 HD, a high-precision 3D inspection scanner built for industrial metrology work that demands fine detail and tight tolerances. The system reaches accuracy of up to 0.004 mm and a minimum point distance of 0.02 mm, figures the company says push "beyond the conventional performance limits" of fringe projection optical scanning.
Four high-resolution cameras drive the capture. That configuration is aimed at complex surfaces and small features, the kind of geometry that defeats lower-resolution systems. Engineers inspecting glossy, thin-walled, or sharply transitioning parts will care most about that combination of camera count and point density, since those surfaces are where conventional measurement tends to drop data.
The company is positioning the scanner across several sectors. In civil aviation, the Q12 HD targets engine and turbine blades, capturing fine blade edges and curved surfaces for dimensional inspection, wear analysis, reverse engineering, and quality verification. For 3C electronics and precision injection molding, it handles earbud housings, connectors, electronic casings, and molded structural parts, measuring assembly gaps, deformation, shrinkage, and surface defects on components with miniature geometries and complex edges.
Medical devices and cultural heritage digitization round out the use cases. The scanner captures fine contours and freeform surfaces on precision instruments for inspection, product development, and digital archiving. For artifacts, its non-contact approach suits delicate engravings, relief patterns, and carved structures while limiting physical contact with valuable objects
For high-volume work, the Q12 HD integrates with robotic automation for repeatable batch inspection. That automation hook reflects where the metrology market is heading, as manufacturers fold optical scanners into production lines rather than treating them as standalone lab tools. The scanner ships as part of SHINING 3D's broader OptimScan Q-series lineup, which the Q12 HD now anchors at the high-accuracy end.
