Rockwell Automation has connected its Plex Quality Management System (QMS) with FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI, an API-enabled integration the company describes as a "real-time closed-loop detection-to-record quality assurance system." The link routes AI-driven visual inspection results, captured on new or existing camera systems, directly into Plex QMS for traceability, product serialization and inspection history, without manual data entry.

Traditional visual inspection is only 80 percent effective, according to Rockwell, and often leaves no searchable inspection record. The interesting part for quality engineers is what happens after a defect gets flagged: FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI catches the anomaly on the line, and Plex QMS logs it immediately, giving quality managers a consistent historical record to trace a specific defective unit back to its inspection data instead of searching through separate, unlinked systems. Rockwell says the system can also support quarantining a batch of parts automatically if a failure rate crosses a set threshold.

The integration builds on Plex QMS's API-first architecture, which Rockwell built for interoperability rather than custom middleware connections. "AI plays a critical role in Rockwell's industrial autonomy strategy," said Devin Burke, group product manager at Rockwell Automation, adding that predictive intelligence lets manufacturers "shift from scripted automation to adaptable autonomy as systems learn, adjust and collaborate across software, hardware and workers."

The VisionAI-QMS link is one of several AI additions Rockwell has rolled into the Plex Smart Manufacturing platform recently. Plex Connected Worker gained an AI-powered authoring agent that converts CAD files and other technical assets into step-by-step digital work instructions, and Plex's Reporting and Analytics tools now include an embedded AI agent that builds dashboards and answers natural-language queries about operational data. "This foundation gives manufacturers the structure, context, and scalability needed to operationalize advanced analytics and AI across complex operations," said Manu Ravichandran, senior product manager at Rockwell Automation.

Rockwell's push follows its own "Scaling MES Across the Enterprise" research, which projects that 42 percent of manufacturing processes will become AI-supported within the next year, a benchmark that puts pressure on plants still running manual inspection logs and paper-based root cause analysis.
