Renishaw launched its XC100 environmental compensator this week at IMTS 2026 in Chicago and AMB 2026 in Stuttgart, a calibration accessory that automatically corrects laser interferometer readings for shifting environmental conditions. Built on the company's existing XC-80 technology, the XC100 tracks air temperature, air pressure and relative humidity, then adjusts the measured laser wavelength in real time. Renishaw says the result is an improved 0.4 ppm linear laser measurement accuracy.

The XC100 also measures material temperature, which lets Renishaw normalize calibration results from machines running at different temperatures back to a standard reference. That matters on a shop floor with machines at different points in a shift: without normalization, calibration numbers from a machine that has been running hot for hours are not directly comparable to numbers from one just starting a cold run. Sensor readings refresh every two seconds and feed continuous automatic adjustments, so the correction runs without an operator re-triggering a compensation routine mid-calibration.

The compensator works with Renishaw's XL-80 laser interferometer and its XM-60 and XM-600 multi-axis calibrators, and integrates with the company's CARTO software. It accepts any combination of air and material sensors, so a setup can scale from a single ambient reading up to coverage across a machine's full working volume. Hardware includes a central XC100 hub with an internal pressure sensor, snap-lock cables and magnetic mounts for the remote sensors, and a high-resolution touchscreen for monitoring sensor status. Renishaw says the design cuts the lag between a temperature change and the sensor registering it, and limits self-heating from the unit's own electronics that could otherwise skew a reading.

"The XC100 simplifies the process of precision laser calibration," said Laurence Rosser, product manager at Renishaw. "By combining real-time environmental monitoring with seamless CARTO software integration, users can be confident in their measurement results, even in changing conditions."

The XC100 is on the show floor at IMTS in Chicago and AMB in Stuttgart through September 19, putting Renishaw's calibration hardware in front of two of the industry's largest machine tool audiences in the same week. Renishaw describes the unit as the latest step in a compensation line that started with the XC-80, rather than a standalone product.
