RealSense unveiled the D585 Pro depth camera at Automate 2026 in Chicago on June 18, targeting humanoid robots, autonomous mobile robots, and industrial inspection systems. Powered by a proprietary Gen 5 system-on-chip, the camera delivers over 2x better depth quality than the previous RealSense generation and 2.5x better close-range performance than competing solutions. CEO Nadav Orbach called it "the actualization of the Visual Cortex of Physical AI," saying developers can now deploy a single depth camera operating from under 15 centimeters to more than 10 meters, indoors or outdoors, with new capabilities arriving through software updates rather than hardware replacement.
The Gen 5 SoC integrates a depth engine, image signal processor, digital signal processor, dedicated AI accelerators, and a quad-core ARM processor, running depth and AI inference entirely on the camera without host compute. For engineers running cobot inspection or bin-picking cells, the close-range figure matters most: sub-15cm minimum range at full resolution, which the company puts at 2.5x better than the nearest competitor. The camera runs at 60 FPS at 1280×960, double the frame rate of 30-FPS-class rivals, across a 120×100° field of view optimized for Visual SLAM. IP65 protection ships standard on every unit, with no premium SKU required.
Two optional on-camera features ship at launch. Depth Compression condenses 2×2-pixel blocks into single-precision depth datapoints, reducing depth-stream bandwidth by 75 percent with no stated accuracy loss. Dual RGB mode delivers simultaneous 30 FPS RGB and 30 FPS depth streams at 1280×960, merged on the camera with no host CPU overhead. The camera connects via GMSL2 and USB-C, with hardware sync support for GPU and x86 deployments.
Alongside the D585 Pro, RealSense announced Perception Studio, a beta program within the RealSense 2.0 SDK, available now as downloadable binaries for registered developers. Initial features include close-range depth extended to under 3cm on the D401 and D405, person detection, and Visual-Inertial Odometry with cuSLAM running on an NVIDIA host. Post-launch SDK releases are planned to add VIO, occupancy grid generation, and auto-calibration to existing D585 Pro hardware.
The D585 Pro is currently in evaluation with multiple global humanoid robot and AMR developers that RealSense declined to identify, and shipping is not expected until Q1 2027. At Automate 2026, the company is also running a live five-camera GMSL2 deployment with partner AVerMedia, a multi-camera scaling demonstration separate from the single-unit D585 Pro announcement.
