PMT Technologies has launched the SMARTSCAN, a handheld 3D laser scanner built for on-site industrial measurement across manufacturing floors, assembly lines, and field environments. The company says the system captures up to 5.5 million measurements per second across a maximum scan area of 700 × 600 mm.
Weighing approximately 530 g without its battery and drawing 4.8 W during operation, SMARTSCAN is positioned for extended use without moving large components to a metrology laboratory. The interesting part is the power figure: PMT says the low wattage reduces thermal drift, which can compromise dimensional accuracy during long scanning sessions.
The scanner operates in three blue laser modes. A 51-line cross-laser mode handles rapid acquisition of large surface areas. A 7-line parallel laser mode addresses fine surface details on precision components. A single-line mode targets deep holes, slots, and recessed features that multi-line configurations typically struggle to reach. An integrated RGB camera captures texture and color information alongside geometry data, allowing the system to generate realistic digital models in addition to dimensional outputs.
Scan data flows into PMT's SkyForm software for mesh generation before moving to PMT Inspect, which handles dimensional inspection, GD&T evaluation, and automated reporting. The system also supports integration with industrial robots and photogrammetry systems, which PMT says allows it to scale from single-part inspection to high-volume automated inspection cells.
The SMARTSCAN joins a product lineup that already includes portable measuring arms, CMMs, and metrology software. The launch follows growing demand for portable solutions that can keep pace with faster production cycles without requiring parts to leave the line. Stated target sectors include automotive, aerospace, energy, medical device manufacturing, and heritage preservation, the last of which suggests PMT is also pursuing cultural and archival scanning markets beyond the shop floor.
