Pleora Technologies has introduced the iPORT GEV-TB, an external frame grabber that plugs GigE Vision cameras into a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port on a laptop, industrial PC, embedded system, or single-board computer. The device effectively turns a GigE Vision camera into a PCIe camera, pulling in up to 22.5 Gbps of imaging data over a standard Cat5e or Cat6A Ethernet cable. Pleora describes the latency as "low, consistent," a claim aimed at high-bandwidth inspection setups that can't tolerate dropped frames.

Under the hood, the iPORT GEV-TB relies on a built-in DMA engine that writes image data directly to host memory, paired with hardware packet resend to recover lost packets without burning CPU cycles. A 4GB frame buffer gives the unit headroom for multi-megapixel sensors, and the fanless design has no moving parts to fail. The unit supports both line scan and area scan camera modes and is compatible with GigE Vision and GenICam standards.

What's new here is the platform flexibility. Removing the need for a PCIe slot means engineers building portable or space-constrained inspection systems, think robot-mounted vision modules or compact in-line gauging stations, can run high-bandwidth GigE Vision cameras on small-form-factor computers that never had room for a frame grabber card.

On the software side, the device pairs with Pleora's eBUS SDK, which gives developers a single API across GigE, 10 GigE, and USB 3.0 cameras. That should simplify integration for shops running mixed-interface camera fleets.

The iPORT GEV-TB ships first as a single-channel device, available either as an off-the-shelf mountable enclosure or as an OEM board set for custom integration. Pleora says dual- and quad-channel versions are coming, with optional support for IEEE 1588 precision time synchronization and Power over Ethernet (PoE/PoE+), which would let future versions power cameras directly over the same cable that carries image data.
