Photoneo has released Bin Picking Studio 1.12 and Locator Studio 1.5, two updates built around what the company calls a theme of "self-sufficiency": modeling and refining parts inside the software, picking trickier objects, and getting commissioning right the first time.
The headline change is in-app 3D model creation. Bin Picking Studio 1.12 can now build a model of a target workpiece directly from a 3D scan inside the web interface, with no CAD file needed. New mesh-editing tools let users crop the scene, simplify geometry, remove background noise, reorient normals, and set an origin point in the same place. The release also adds PLY import alongside STL. Missing or unusable CAD data has long been one of the more common bottlenecks in a bin picking deployment, so engineers who've had to export scans to third-party mesh software and reimport them will care about skipping that detour, though Photoneo notes the workflow suits semi-structured setups with consistent viewing angles best.
Locator Studio 1.5 adds on-demand object classification, tagging identified objects as occluded or clear, or by color group, when paired with AI-based localization. Previously, a pose estimate told a robot where an object was but nothing about its condition or type, which meant a separate vision system was needed for sorting by color or picking clean parts first. A new scanning profile tuned for AI recognition aims to hand the neural network a cleaner color image, since recognition accuracy suffers most on the non-uniform items, like packages and retail goods, AI localization is meant to handle.
A dedicated calibration scanning profile applies settings tuned for calibration accuracy rather than relying on whatever scan settings happen to be active, cutting a common source of re-runs. Fast-Scan, which skips full relocalization by confirming an object hasn't moved, now works with the MultiView Module, extending its cycle-time savings to multi-sensor setups for the first time.
Bin Picking Studio's robot database also gains Estun, bringing the total to more than 275 models across more than 11 brands with path-planning support for 6-axis arms. The release adds system load monitoring and logging as well, giving integrators visibility into computing resources during operation.
