Digital Metrology has released OmniSurf 5.0, a major update to its surface profile analysis software with a revamped interface and new tools for pre-processing, geometry extraction and filtering. The company says the release includes analysis tools "not available in any other software."
The headline addition is the Wavelength Content graph, which shows the dominant wavelengths in a profile. Users place cursors on the graph to set filter cutoffs that separate form, waviness and roughness, so specifications come from measured part data. OmniSurf 5.0 offers 10 filter types that meet ISO 16610 and 16620, five of them robust filters that handle outlying data. It calculates hundreds of ISO 21920 and ASME parameters, plus Digital Metrology's own function-specific ones.
Wear analysis gets two tools. Macro Wear computes the depth and volume of a wear scar. Micro Wear compares worn and unworn data to measure microscopic wear without accelerated testing, and it works even when the before and after data come from different areas of a surface or from different parts. Morphological filters model how a soft surface such as a gasket or seal meets a rigid one. The closing filter, which the company calls a "virtual gasket," reveals voids where leaks could occur. The opening filter highlights features that could cause cracking or penetrate an oil film.
For quality engineers, the batch processing is the practical piece. OmniSurf imports hundreds of datasets at once, and Digital Metrology says it can analyze parameters across days of production in seconds. Results can be exported to suppliers and customers, or built into a PowerPoint presentation.
"Numbers alone aren't enough to tell how a part is performing, or why it failed," said Mark Malburg, President of Digital Metrology Solutions. He said the software "brings surface analysis out of the lab and into everyone's hands."
OmniSurf reads files from dozens of formats, including those from Mitutoyo and Taylor Hobson instruments. It also imports aspheric prescriptions and freeform shapes to remove overall geometry from optics and crowned bearings.
OmniSurf 5.0 is sold as a single-use license or as a subscription package for IT-managed companies. Academic pricing is available. Digital Metrology says upgrades are free for the life of the product and that there are no annual maintenance fees.
