Nikon Corporation has added the NEXIV VMF-K6561 to its NEXIV 3D Confocal series, a high-speed optical measurement system built around a 650 by 610mm stage that can accommodate a complete 600 by 600mm panel in a single setup. The system targets panel-level package inspection in semiconductor and precision engineering, where larger substrates have outgrown conventional video measuring stages.
The stage is the headline change. Existing VMF-K models top out below the dimensions needed for full 600 by 600mm PLP substrates, forcing operators to reposition panels and stitch measurements together. The VMF-K6561 measures the entire panel in one pass. Nikon has also increased the thickness of the stage glass to maintain stability across the larger inspection area, addressing the deflection and accuracy drift that typically accompany scaled-up stages.
What's new here for engineers running PLP lines is throughput math. Eliminating repositioning steps removes both the cycle time of each move and the alignment and stitching overhead that follows. For high-volume inspection where panel handling is a bottleneck, single-setup measurement compresses the inspection window and reduces the number of registration errors compounding into the final dataset.
The rest of the VMF-K platform carries over. The series combines 2D and 3D optical measurement with a confocal imaging system that Nikon positions for high-contrast surfaces, reflective components, and transparent substrates, the materials that give conventional video measurement systems trouble. Combining surface and height analysis in one instrument cuts the inspection time that engineers would otherwise split across separate tools.
The launch lands as the semiconductor industry continues to push panel-level packaging as an alternative to wafer-level approaches for certain advanced packaging applications, where larger substrate area improves utilization but demands metrology that can keep up. Nikon has not disclosed pricing, throughput figures in panels per hour, or accuracy specifications for the VMF-K6561, and the company has not named launch customers or regional availability for the new configuration.
