Nidec Machine Tool America is showing RoboCam for the first time at IMTS 2026 in Chicago, a robotic inspection system that uses AI to evaluate the condition of gear cutting tools. The system positions a camera to capture images of a tool, then applies artificial intelligence to assess wear and support decisions on maintenance and replacement.
Gear cutting tools wear down as they run, and that wear affects both machining performance and the quality of the gears the tools produce. Many shops still catch that wear through manual visual checks or inspections timed to production schedules rather than the tool's actual condition. RoboCam automates the image-capture step with a robotic arm and camera, then hands the resulting imagery to an AI model trained to flag changes in tool condition. The interesting part is what Nidec is building around that image, not the image itself: the company positions RoboCam as a tool-condition monitoring system first and an imaging system second.
That distinction matters for process control. Running a cutting tool past its useful life can degrade machining accuracy and gear quality, while swapping tools too early adds unnecessary tooling cost and interrupts production. A system that reports observed condition, rather than a fixed replacement interval, gives gear manufacturers a basis for condition-based maintenance instead of calendar-based maintenance.
Because RoboCam is designed to run with limited operator involvement, Nidec is also pitching it as a component that can slot into an automated manufacturing workflow rather than sit as a standalone inspection station. For high-volume gear producers, that could mean less manual inspection labor and a more consistent record of how each tool's condition changes over time, information that can feed directly into maintenance planning.
RoboCam's debut fits a broader shift in manufacturing metrology, where AI is increasingly applied to interpret inspection data rather than just collect it.
