Mitutoyo has opened a Semiconductor Competence Center in Dresden, Germany, putting nanometer-level measurement and inspection equipment in Silicon Saxony, one of Europe's main microelectronics clusters. The facility covers approximately 300 square meters.

The center houses nanometer-precise measurement systems that visitors can use for demonstrations and for testing in real-world applications. Mitutoyo says the equipment targets applications where dimensional accuracy and geometric precision are critical, along with surface characteristics. Customers can also book personalized consulting with Mitutoyo's metrology staff.

Training is part of the offer. Mitutoyo runs training and certification programs tailored to semiconductor manufacturing, and customers and industry professionals can learn how modern metrology technologies apply to chip production. For metrology and quality engineers at fabs and equipment suppliers in the region, the site offers a place to try measurement approaches on their own applications before committing to them on the line.

Mitutoyo says the local presence is meant to shorten communication channels and speed decisions between users and its metrology experts. Ray Penny, President of Mitutoyo Europe, said the center represents an investment in "the knowledge and customer support needed to help our partners meet the challenges of next-generation chip manufacturing."

The choice of Dresden follows the regional ecosystem of chip manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and research institutions. Mitutoyo points to continued expansion of semiconductor manufacturing capacity in Europe as a driver of demand for high-precision inspection and measurement. The company says the center is also meant to help customers improve process reliability and shorten time-to-market.
