Microchip Technology has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hailo, a provider of edge AI processors and vision systems on chip whose products target industrial automation, smart cameras, drones, and robotics applications. The deal is expected to close by September 30, pending regulatory approvals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Hailo's portfolio centers on the Hailo-8, Hailo-10 and Hailo-15 processors, which span dedicated AI inference accelerators and vision SoCs. The vision products integrate image signal processing, DSP, and AI acceleration on a single chip, supporting CNNs, transformers, LLM and vision-language model workloads, H.264/H.265 video encoding, and AI video stream processing. Engineers building inline inspection systems or autonomous guided vehicles will find the on-chip ISP and AI inference combination relevant to reducing latency and wiring complexity in machine vision pipelines.
The acquisition brings more than 100 existing customers and a developer community Microchip describes as exceeding 10,000 users, built through Hailo's Raspberry Pi ecosystem, a gated Developer Zone, GitHub presence, and community forums. Mark Reiten, Microchip's Senior Corporate Vice President, said Hailo's "AI acceleration, advanced vision processing and software ecosystem directly complements Microchip's embedded processing, FPGA, connectivity, security, power and analog portfolio."
Microchip previously acquired Neuronix AI Labs for neural network optimization technology targeting FPGAs and SoCs. Adding Hailo's dedicated edge AI processors and vision SoCs extends that reach into hardware-accelerated AI pipelines across a wider range of end devices, from specialty edge servers running local generative AI workloads down to small form factor standalone cameras.
The deal reflects ongoing consolidation among embedded semiconductor vendors working to build full stacks for AI at the edge. Hailo CEO Orr Danon said Microchip's "customer reach, channel scale and broad technology portfolio would create a strong platform for bringing advanced vision processing and AI acceleration to broader range of intelligent edge applications." No product integration roadmap or changes to Hailo branding were announced alongside the agreement.
