METTLER TOLEDO's Product Inspection group will bring its M50 R-Series AdvancedLine metal detectors to North America at Pack Expo, running Oct. 18–21 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The three-model line is built around a new eDrive PLUS technology paired with a 900 kHz frequency, which the company says delivers its "highest sensitivity" yet for detecting small wire and irregularly shaped metal contaminants in food production.
The lineup splits by application. The M55R targets dry products such as pasta, savory snacks and deep-frozen produce that won't thaw during inspection. The M55RB is built for bulk product like large sacks and powder cartons, with radio frequency interference shields and a coil geometry meant to hold detection performance steady on busy lines. The M56R covers a wider range: chilled, wet, dry, deep-frozen and metalized film-wrapped products, running multiple simultaneous frequencies alongside an enhanced 3S PLUS algorithm and machine learning trained to cut false rejects on wet or conductive product, plus the same 900 kHz tuned frequency used on dry goods. For plants running mixed production, having one detector family span dry, wet and bulk formats cuts down on the number of separate units that need validating for traceability audits.
Operationally, the M50 R-Series switches to a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen that METTLER TOLEDO says responds through gloves or on a wet screen, the way a phone or tablet would, replacing the resistive touchscreens on earlier models. Routine testing runs through a new INFINITY Electronic Test System, which the company says completes automated checks up to three times faster than manual testing and can run test sequences without an operator present. Embedded Wi-Fi gives technicians QR code access to system data, and RFID-based access control adds individual operator logins with activity records stored locally or pushed out over OPC-UA and EtherNet/IP.
Manufacturers can also link the detectors to METTLER TOLEDO's ProdX software, which pools inspection data across the company's Product Inspection equipment and stores it indefinitely for compliance records. METTLER TOLEDO will show the M50 R-Series at Booth 2122 during Pack Expo.
