Mahr has repositioned its optical 3D surface metrology line as a modular measuring station, letting users pair a measuring platform with one of five measuring heads rather than buying a fixed configuration. The headline addition is a multisensor head, designated MS, that combines three area-based technologies in a single unit: confocal, white light interferometry, and focus variation.
The multisensor head is the part that changes a working setup. It covers surface measurements down to what Mahr describes as the lower nanometer range in real time, so an operator inspecting a mix of surface types does not swap instruments between measurements. Engineers who currently move parts between a confocal system and an interferometer to cover both rough and fine features are the intended audience. The other four heads stay available as single-technology options: a WI white light interferometer for sub-nanometer vertical resolution, a CM confocal head for everyday surface work, and CP and CL 3D profilometers, the latter aimed at fast large-area scanning.
On the platform side, Mahr offers two bases. The MarSurf3D SX is the compact option, with integrated damping and axis sizes up to 200 mm, positioned as the lower-cost choice for smaller workpieces. The MarSurf3D GS uses a gantry design for workpieces from 200 mm and up, with axis options that scale to the part. Mahr offers the GS with an integrated overview camera, a point sensor, and an enclosure as options, and rates it for 24/7 operation, which points at in-line or near-line quality checks rather than lab-only use.
Both platforms run Mahr's MarSurf3D surface analysis software, which evaluates roughness, waviness, step height, contour, and other parameters and generates reports through profile views, 3D reconstructions, and reflection images. Users can build their own evaluation recipes.
The modular approach is the real shift here. By splitting the platform from the head, Mahr lets a shop start with a single-technology configuration and move to the multisensor head later without replacing the base, though the company has not published pricing or the axis-travel figures that would let buyers size the GS against a specific part envelope.
