Lumafield has launched Mars, an in-line arrayed X-ray inspection system built to scan every part moving down a production line without slowing it. The company is positioning Mars as a way to run "100% production inspection" instead of the sample-based checks most manufacturers rely on today, reaching speeds of up to 2.5 feet (760 mm) per second, fast enough to keep pace with high-volume lines.

Mars ships in two configurations: a 2D array and a 2.5D multilinear array that captures depth data in a single pass, giving inspectors a fuller picture of internal defects than flat X-ray images allow. Source and detector modules can be arranged for overhead or side-view scanning depending on how parts sit on the conveyor, and the system integrates with existing conveyor hardware, either as a standalone module with its own conveyor or a wraparound unit installed over a line already in place. Lumafield says Mars works with all major PLCs, and flagged parts can be handled through configurable sorting and rejection.

What's new here is the layer connecting the hardware to Voyager, Lumafield's cloud software. Every scan feeds into a running record of feature distributions across a production run, which the company says can surface process drift before it turns into a yield problem. Parts flagged on Mars can also be routed to Lumafield's Triton Performance system for full 3D CT scanning, confirming a defect without scrapping units that might have passed a closer look.

Applications span automotive and defense components, electronics, batteries, and consumer packaged goods, and Mars can scan sealed or boxed products through their packaging, letting logistics teams sort defective returns without breaking a seal. "In-line X-ray inspection has existed for decades, but these systems have always been limited by the intelligence of their software," said Andreas Bastian, co-founder and chief technology officer at Lumafield. "Mars uses AI to solve quality issues that were previously impossible to address with automated X-ray inspection."

Lumafield's own research suggests why the company is pitching Mars as a fix for a widespread bottleneck. According to its 2026 Cost of Quality Report, 77 percent of manufacturers still lean on manual visual inspection, and nearly half spend up to 10 percent of total production labor hours on checks that still miss internal defects. Mars is available now through Lumafield, with access arranged via a scheduled product demo rather than public list pricing.
