Lapmaster Wolters and Precision Surfacing Solutions has closed a minority equity investment from affiliates of The Cynosure Group and Fernweh Group. The company, which builds precision surface-finishing machines and consumables for semiconductor, advanced materials, precision optics, and advanced packaging customers, says the money strengthens its balance sheet and adds two long-term investors.

Lapmaster Wolters plans to spend the funds on faster product development, a bigger global sales and service network, and added capacity. It also names investment in "key precision surfacing technologies" as a priority. The company says its machines are used to produce a considerable share of the world's premium semiconductor wafers.

The company ties the timing to demand. Customers in semiconductors, advanced materials, and optics keep asking for tighter tolerances and higher throughput, according to Lapmaster Wolters. It points to continued investment in semiconductor and advanced packaging capacity, expanding AI and high-performance computing supply chains, and wider use of silicon carbide in electric vehicles and other power applications. For manufacturing executives who track wafer-processing equipment, the stated use of proceeds is capacity and new-generation machines rather than debt reduction.

The product range covers slicing, single-side lapping and polishing, double-side flat grinding, lapping, polishing, and deburring systems. Customers also include automotive, aerospace, ceramics, glass, metals, and polymers producers. Alongside the machines, Lapmaster Wolters sells a full line of consumables and process expertise, and it operates through subsidiaries and regional sales and service centers worldwide.

Cynosure is a diversified investment firm with offices in Salt Lake City and New York. Its Cynosure Partners unit backs profitable small and midsize North American companies. Fernweh, founded in 2021 and based in California, invests in industrial and industrial technology businesses it describes as part of a "Titanium Economy" of essential, often overlooked industrial companies.

Cantor Fitzgerald & Co. served as financial advisor to Lapmaster Wolters, and Latham & Watkins was its legal counsel.
