The International Organization for Standardization published ISO 9001:2026 on September 16, 2026, the sixth edition of the world's most widely used quality management standard and its first revision since 2015. More than one million organizations across 189 countries hold certificates against the standard, which ISO calls the "gold standard in quality management" for building and running a quality management system.
The new edition keeps the core clause structure familiar to anyone who has audited against ISO 9001:2015, but it adopts ISO's latest Harmonized Structure for management system standards, the shared architecture also used in ISO 14001. That alignment narrows the gap between separate management system audits. The revision also splits risk from opportunity in a new section meant to clarify how organizations weigh both in strategic decisions, and adds emphasis on leadership accountability and ethical behavior within a quality culture.
For labs and manufacturers that stack ISO 9001 underneath sector-specific frameworks such as IATF 16949 or ISO/IEC 17025, the Harmonized Structure update matters more than the wording changes. It reduces duplicate paperwork for QA departments running combined audits across multiple certifications at once.
Sam Somerville, chair of ISO/TC 176 Subcommittee 2 and convenor of the working group that led the revision, said the process "enabled us to challenge ideas, build consensus and develop a standard that reflects the different realities organizations face today." ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica called the publication "a milestone that reflects both the enduring strength of this International Standard and its ability to evolve alongside the needs of organizations worldwide."
ISO 9001:2026 will also be the first standard folded into ISO's new digitally enhanced content offering, arriving October 1, 2026. Organizations already certified to ISO 9001:2015 don't need to act immediately. ISO says the transition timeline runs on each organization's own certification cycle, and certified companies should contact their certification body directly to confirm their deadline.
