Instruct3D has launched Additive Build Intelligence, a platform for metal additive manufacturing that combines camera-based build monitoring with physics-based process prediction to flag potential build failures before they happen. The Sheffield, UK company, which built the platform on more than 20 years of additive manufacturing research at the University of Sheffield, positions it as a step beyond standalone in-situ monitoring systems. "Metal AM does not need more disconnected data," said Ben Thomas, co-founder and chief executive officer at Instruct3D. "It needs intelligence that helps manufacturers make better decisions before, during, and after the build."
The platform runs on Instruct3D's AdditiveOS software, which ingests camera data from the company's VertX hardware and analyzes it alongside physics-based predictions of how a build should behave. According to Instruct3D, the system can flag where issues are likely to occur during a print, analyze events as they happen mid-build, generate verification data for quality records, and apply lessons from earlier builds to future production runs. That combination targets a persistent cost center on the shop floor: failed metal builds that consume machine time, powder and inspection hours before a defect is caught.
Rob Snell, co-founder at Instruct3D, said the hardware is secondary to what happens with the data it collects. "Cameras are part of the system, but they are not the story," Snell said. "The story is what we do with the data. By linking measured build behaviour with physics-based prediction and learning workflows, we can help users understand the material reality of the build, not just observe the process."
Instruct3D said the technology is already installed on multiple machines internationally, spanning academic labs, contract manufacturers and prime-led production programs. Users in aerospace, defense, energy and advanced manufacturing are applying it to reduce failed builds, shorten parameter development cycles and generate evidence to support part qualification and quality verification.
Instruct3D plans to present Additive Build Intelligence at ICAM 2026 in Orlando, Florida.
