IDS Imaging Development Systems is positioning the uEye SFA as the rugged member of its uEye Live monitoring cameras. The model carries an IP69K-rated housing, an 8-megapixel Sony IMX678 sensor from the STARVIS 2 series, and streaming functions that run on the camera itself. IDS describes it as a camera for "harsh environments" where dust, moisture, and high-pressure cleaning are routine.

The housing is dusttight and withstands high-pressure water jets during cleaning. A screw-mounted lens tube and screw-lock connectors secure and seal the cable connection, including under vibration. Power over Ethernet carries data and power over one cable at distances of up to 100 meters.

Marcus Rembold, Product Manager at IDS, said the camera is "easy to integrate and delivers reliable live images even under demanding conditions." He also credited the IMX678 with "excellent image quality, even in low-light environments."

Like the rest of the series, the uEye SFA runs standalone. The uEye Live cameras use an Ambarella system-on-chip, so no separate PC is needed. The camera supports hardware-accelerated encoding and can send up to three parallel video streams, either H.264 over RTSP or MJPEG over HTTP. Each stream can have its own settings, which helps when several systems consume the same feed. Setup happens through a browser-based web interface, and a REST API lets machine controls or application programs configure the camera.

For manufacturing and automation engineers, the event recording function is the practical detail. A software command or a trigger line starts recording into the camera's internal memory, and the seconds before, during, and after an event are captured. IDS says this documents machine malfunctions and failures so process errors can be analyzed afterward. An onboard image signal processor handles auto exposure, auto white balance, HDR, and defect pixel correction.

The uEye SFA sits alongside two other uEye Live designs. The uEye SCP measures 29 x 29 x 29 mm, the industry standard housing size, and takes common lenses through a C-mount adapter. The uEye SLE is a 45 x 45 mm single-board camera built as a design-to-cost concept for machine and device manufacturers working on high-volume projects. It ships with a C-mount or S-mount lens holder, or without one for users who fit their own optics. A motherboard variant of the SLE splits the sensor and an RJ45 daughterboard across flex cables, and it now also supports PoE.
