Hexagon's Portable Metrology Division has released HYPERSCAN SR, a fully wireless optical tracking 3D scanner for inspection work on the shop floor, at supplier sites and in the field. The company positions it as the entry point to the HYPERSCAN series, with volumetric accuracy starting from 0.06mm at 3.2m.
WiFi 6 connectivity and swappable batteries are built into both the scanner and the tracker. That removes the tethered wireless accessory and any cable routing. Dynamic optical tracking places the scanner and the part in a single coordinate system, so the scan holds when the part moves or the setup vibrates. Hexagon says optical tracking has typically required cabling, careful setup and a metrology specialist, and that SR is built for inspection leads and field-service engineers who have none of those on hand.
Darren Goh, Product Director for Handheld 3D Scanners at Hexagon, said the native WiFi 6 and battery power let teams bring the system into "limited-access and power-limited areas that a larger, cabled setup can't reach."
The scanner weighs 1.3kg without its battery and has on-device controls and a voice assistant. Target-free wide area scanning covers small and medium parts such as welded machine frames, cast housings, tooling and fixtures, and vehicle interiors. Scanning modes run up to 4 million points per second, and the scanner offers hole flash capture and edge detection. Point clouds export to STL and other common formats, with one-click transfer to Geomagic or PolyWorks.
For quality engineers, the pitch is certified data at the point of production. Hexagon says it replaces deferred or estimated shop floor checks with measurements verified in the working environment. Each unit is calibrated in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, and the data is certified to VDI/VDE 2634-3.
HYPERSCAN SR joins HYPERSCAN Ultra, which Hexagon describes as the production workhorse, and HYPERSCAN Super, which covers the largest parts and automated inspection cells. All three models share the same workflow and coordinate system. SR can also be integrated with robotic automation through a standardised integrator kit. It is available globally from Hexagon and its resellers.
