FARO CREAFORM has launched the MetraSCAN BLACK2, a portable metrology-grade optical 3D scanner that lets a quality team scan and probe a part within the same session instead of swapping hardware between tasks. The company frames the design as a "3-in-1 architecture" combining C-Track scanning, stand-alone scanning, and, when paired with the HandyPROBE, contact probing in one unit. FARO CREAFORM positions it for "total inspection flexibility" across different part sizes and shop-floor conditions.
The scanner uses 46 blue laser lines and captures up to 2.8 million measurements per second, which the company puts at roughly 56 percent faster data acquisition than the prior generation. Its C-Track Flex Volume now reaches 46.7 cubic meters, three times larger than before, so operators can cover bigger parts with fewer repositioning steps. C-Track mode targets high-productivity inspection of large parts, while a stand-alone mode drops the tracker for quick deployment in tighter spaces.
The parallel workflow is the part that separates this from the prior models. Against the existing MetraSCAN BLACK+ and BLACK+ Elite, FARO CREAFORM says the BLACK2 adds true stand-alone scanning for portability and, more to the point, lets teams scan and probe in parallel rather than reconfiguring equipment between the two. Engineers who currently keep separate scanning and probing setups are the intended audience. New automatic shutter functionality, single-cable connectivity, and setup assistance tools cover the usability side.
On accuracy, the system is tested in ISO/IEC 17025-accredited calibration laboratories, with acceptance testing based on ISO 10360 and VDI/VDE 2634 Part 3, the benchmarks a manufacturer typically requires before trusting a portable scanner's output for compliance documentation. "MetraSCAN BLACK2 was developed to give manufacturers a more adaptable inspection solution without compromising certified accuracy," said Olivier Plamondon, Technical Product Manager at FARO CREAFORM.
The launch, dated August 4 from Lévis, Québec, fits a broader move among portable metrology vendors to fold scanning, probing, and volumetric coverage into single field-deployable units rather than separate stations. FARO CREAFORM has not published pricing or availability dates for the BLACK2.
