Emerson released the Flexim FLUXUS 631 series of portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters on July 8. The 631 series is the flagship of Emerson's portable flow measurement lineup, using externally mounted ultrasonic sensors to read flow through pipe walls without pipe cuts, process interruption, or contact with process media. Emerson says a liquid measurement can be running in under five minutes from setup.
The hardware handles a broad range of media types across model variants: low-pressure gases, high-viscosity liquids, liquids with entrained gas or solid content, saturated steam and high-temperature steam. Dual measurement channels and update rates of up to 20 milliseconds accommodate fast-changing process conditions. An integrated Dynamic Gas Meter feature calculates gas density and concentration on the instrument itself, removing the need to pull samples for a separate chromatograph.
The interesting part is that the 631 series handles fixed meter verification, pump and compressor performance testing under actual operating conditions, leak detection and condition monitoring with a single device. Rebecca Cottrell, product manager for Emerson's measurement instrumentation business, said the platform gives users "visibility to all aspects of operations" beyond where permanent meters can reach.
Battery specifications support extended field deployments. A high-capacity lithium-ion cell delivers more than 25 hours of continuous autonomous operation. A low-power mode extends runtime to up to 80 days, enabling long-term unattended monitoring. The enclosure is rated to IP65 or IP67 depending on model. Connectivity options include Modbus RTU, digital and current outputs, and USB for data transfer and configuration.
The 631 series targets industries from oil and gas to life sciences, and pricing has not been disclosed. Some models add thermal energy measurement capability, extending the platform into energy performance analysis alongside flow verification.
