DMG MORI has introduced probeSET, a system that calibrates machine-tool probes inside the machine's enclosed workspace, with no operator setting the Z-pin to zero by hand. The company reports a cycle time of 60 seconds on a DMU 65 monoBLOCK and calls that "significantly faster" than conventional calibration solutions.
Calibration runs through a technology cycle. The calibration sphere sits directly on the movable Z-pin, which DMG MORI says reduces the number of mechanical components and shortens cycle times compared with other designs. During a run, probeSET determines the probe center offset, probe radius and probe length, plus 3D measurement points when required. Results are output as a report and stored in a continuous history.
Accuracy is the second claim. DMG MORI says standard procedures can produce deviations of more than 8 µm, and that automating the process lowers the risk of operator error. For quality engineers who rely on in-process probing, a one-minute calibration that leaves a record makes recalibrating after a probe change or a significant temperature shift easier to justify.
The probeSET package includes the hardware, fixture included, and the associated technology cycle. It is available for machining centers in the monoBLOCK, H monoBLOCK, duoBLOCK and Portal series, as well as DMU Gantry models and the DMU/DMC 55 H TWIN.
DMG MORI positions probeSET as one of three calibration solutions in its portfolio for high-precision part machining. VCS Complete 2.0 monitors and recalibrates volumetric accuracy. 3D-quickSET 2.0 checks and optimizes five-axis kinematics, specifically the rotary and swivel axes.
