Cognex Corporation on May 5 launched the In-Sight® 3900 Vision System, a fully integrated machine vision platform powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing™ processors that processes inspections up to 4X faster than the previous generation of Cognex embedded systems. The unit supports image sensors up to 25 megapixels and handles throughput up to 5,000 parts per minute, all without an external PC.
The In-Sight 3900 combines three distinct tool types on a single device: Edge AI tools for fast standard inspections, Advanced AI tools for high-variability applications, and rule-based vision tools for deterministic measurement and code reading. A dedicated AI processor and high-performance multi-core compute handle real-time decision-making at full line speed. Dual Ethernet ports, supporting EtherCAT and industrial Ethernet, provide 2.5 Gb connectivity for PLC synchronization and data transfer. What's new here is the ability to run all three tool classes concurrently at production speed, something that previously required PC-tethered setups or trade-offs against line rate.
Andrea Sabbadini, Engineering Manager at Fuji Seal, said the system allowed the company to deploy Edge AI Read tools at full production speed on its high-speed packaging lines, where previously only traditional OCR tools could keep up. Sabbadini noted the result was "faster to set up and easier to maintain across our lines."
The In-Sight 3900 also carries expanded memory: double the processing memory and 8X more storage compared to earlier Cognex platforms, which supports larger inspection jobs and faster changeovers. An advanced imaging stack includes HDR+ for single-acquisition high-contrast images, enhanced depth-of-field to keep parts in focus across varying heights, and exposure times 80 percent faster than conventional systems.
When paired with Cognex OneVision™, the In-Sight 3900 connects to a cloud-to-edge AI vision environment where manufacturers can train models centrally and deploy them across multiple devices. That architecture positions the camera as part of a broader platform play at a moment when industrial AI buyers are increasingly evaluating ecosystem lock-in alongside hardware specs.
