BMW Group Plant Landshut is taking the lead on software development for AI-powered humanoid robots in component production, the automaker announced on 21 July 2026. The facility will build open software platforms, training data pipelines, simulation systems, and robotic training frameworks, work that complements humanoid pilot projects already running at Plants Leipzig and Spartanburg.

The technical core combines traditional deterministic programming with Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, which link visual input, language comprehension, and physical robot action. Human operators demonstrate movement patterns and work sequences first, with the resulting data captured via camera systems, motion capture suits, and data gloves. That data feeds into generalisable behavioral models, called policies, which robots can apply across different tasks and environments. New approaches are validated outside active production before being scaled in stages.

What's new here is the intent to build transferable skills rather than task-specific programs. Landshut's stated goal is a modular ecosystem where capabilities learned on one robotic platform carry over to others, a distinction that matters to engineers tracking component handling automation at scale.

Plant Landshut is partnering with Athenyx Robotics, a startup that emerged from RWTH Aachen University's Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering and is located near the Landshut site. Athenyx is co-developing what BMW Group describes as an "intelligence stack" integrating perception, learning, simulation, and decision-making. The University of Applied Sciences Landshut is also contributing, focusing on data generation, simulation, and specific use case development.

Target applications center on tasks that still resist full automation: recognizing and interpreting working environments, determining component position and condition, planning efficient movement paths, and precisely gripping and relocating parts. Christoph Jagoda, Physical AI project manager at BMW Group Plant Landshut, said the team is focused on identifying "which applications are suitable for industrial use" rather than validating technical capability in isolation. The Landshut program gives the broader humanoid robotics initiative a dedicated software development hub, distinct from the deployment-focused pilot work running at Leipzig and Spartanburg.
