BitFlow, Inc., a division of Advantech, says its full frame grabber lineup, including the Axion, Aon, Claxon, and Cyton series, is available for immediate order while many competing products face backlogs of 20 to 30 or more weeks. The cause of that gap is a global DRAM shortage that has left frame grabber manufacturers relying on onboard DDR memory unable to source components in volume.
Hyperscalers and AI infrastructure builders have locked in production capacity at Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, redirecting wafer output toward high-bandwidth memory for AI GPUs. HBM consumes three to four times more silicon per gigabyte than standard DDR, accelerating the drawdown on conventional supply. As of June 2026, DDR4 and DDR5 lead times exceed 20 to 30 weeks across many regions, and year-over-year DRAM supply growth is running below 16 percent while AI demand continues to outpace it.
BitFlow's boards carry no onboard DDR because they never did. Its StreamSync acquisition architecture, an evolution of an earlier design the company called Flow Thru', streams pixel data directly into user-allocated buffers in host system RAM or GPU memory using a scatter-gather DMA engine. Small FIFO buffers handle PCIe bus asynchrony, and SRAM stores timing and camera control configuration tables. What's new here is not the architecture but what it is worth today: engineers sourcing frame grabbers for active programs do not need to wait until 2027. "Our competitors that built their frame grabbers around commodity DRAM are on backorder. We're not. BitFlow customers can order today and receive product," said Donal Waide, Director of Business Development at iSystems, Advantech.
The direct-DMA approach supports Camera Link and CoaXPress interfaces and targets machine vision, semiconductor inspection, life sciences, and defense applications. BitFlow also notes native compatibility with GPU-direct workflows for compute-intensive pipelines.
Supply constraints are on track to last into 2027. Allocation rationing has become standard practice at distribution level, with some retailers already limiting individual DDR purchase quantities, a condition that has no effect on BitFlow's production pipeline.
